VM Labs' Nuon
Since a few readers have asked me to make a mention of VM Labs' NUON (previously known as Project X), I've decided to indulge in the sea of condemnation that has been directed toward this new "videogame system." (Notice the quotes).  I remember a few years ago at a trade show when VM Labs hired actors to run around the convention floor dressed in lab coats and carrying briefcases that said, "Top Secret: Project X." I didn't buy it then, and I don't buy it now.  Due to be integrated into DVD players coming this Spring from companies such as Toshiba, NUON promises to deliver multimedia capabilities such as letting users of set-top boxes playing MP3 files on their TVs.  Yet the company is also set on delivering games and competing with Sony and Nintendo.  Apparently the launch software for the system includes an updated version of Tempest (remember it on the Atari Jaguar?) and NUON versions of Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective and Dracula Unleashed, two of the earliest full motion video games done in the early 90s.  I think VM Labs should do everyone a favor and just forgot the games.  Does anyone really want to re-play Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective even if the video is crystal-clear? I think not.
