GameStock 2000 Edition

This week's column is devoted to Microsoft's GameStock event that took place on March 1, 2000 at the company's Seattle campus.  The company previewed most of its 2000 lineup of games, and also gave a sneak preview of a few games due in 2001.

Overall Impressions
Leave it to Microsoft to pull off one of the biggest press events focused on PC gaming.  Although most game developers have to settle for debuting their new games amid some 2,000 other products at E3, Microsoft takes the time – and incurs great expense – to hold a special preview of their new games for journalists from around the world.  Although there was a scripted presentation in an auditorium during the morning session, the entire afternoon was devoted to letting journalists play the games, with the designers standing by to answer questions.  It's a nice change from the typical E3 pitch a journalist experiences where the marketing folks run you through a scripted demo; your hands seldom touch a mouse or keyboard to actually play a game. A few months ago in this column I mentioned a survey that said Microsoft had the most online press coverage, and now you know why: Going into E3, journalists already know what Microsoft has planned for the rest of the year.  So, without further ado, here's a capsulated view of the hot games (and a few that remain question marks):
