Deus Ex (Eidos)

Ion Storm looks to get on your good side with Warren Spector's impressive new RPG

Despite the fact that the name Ion Storm has been inextricably linked to Daikatana for the past few years, 2000 looks to be a big year for the company, especially when it comes to Warren Spector's new role-playing adventure, Deus Ex.  Heralded by many as a revolutionary new step in gaming, this futuristic game seems to be System Shock meets Half-Life.  You play J.C. Denton, an investigative field agent who has to cope with a world rife technology with social stratification.

The game uses Epic Games' Unreal engine and will take you through a number of locations, both outdoors and indoors. (Just don't look for the White House level, which was allegedly scrapped after complains from the Government).  Those in the know are whispering that Deus Ex may just be game of the year material, and if it does come out this Spring, the game will breathe much-needed life into the action/RPG genre.

Vampire: The Masquerade: Redemption (Activision)

Who doesn't want to be a vampire?  Activision's new RPG may be this Spring's most anticpated game

Although Vampire is the one game on the list with the most uncertain release date (it may or may not be out this Spring) there's no denying it's going to have a dramatic impact on gaming when it does arrive in the next few months.  Set in the World of Darkness, you play Christof, a vampire of the Brujah Clan who feeds on the blood of mortals and works with other vampires in a quest to defeat your nemesis, Vukodlak, a powerful Vampire lord.

In addition to a gripping story, Vampire easily makes this list thanks to its incredible 3D graphics and streamlined point-and-click interface.  The game made a huge impact at trade shows last year, and based on what we've heard, it's likely to live up to the hype and help fill the void of good story-driven games on the PC.    Besides, the idea of playing a vampire is just too trendy to resist.

Next Week
The Gist List, with topics including Monkey Island 4, Diablo II, and multi-platform multiplayer.  Stay tuned!
