BeachHead 2000 (The Game)

WizardWorks is always one of those companies that doesn’t really even register on my radar, in part because they sell software that is of the $19.95 variety and in the same vein as Deer Hunter.  So imagine my surprise last week when I found myself look at the box for its latest game, BeachHead 2000.   Looking at the screenshots on the back of the box, this game actually looked fun.  (Check out the screenshots and see if you agree).

Sure it wasn’t going to be the next Half-Life, but I wondered if BeachHead might be a fun little action game with good graphics and lots of action.   I installed the game and started to play it.  It actually looked pretty good – there was a beach landing and the troops started to run toward my protective bunker.  The helicopters began to fly above and I was starting to feel like I was living in the world of Saving Private Ryan.

"The mouse control in this game is so imprecise it borders on hilarious."

But then all was lost when I tried to move my gun turret.  The mouse control in this game is so imprecise it borders on hilarious that someone would release a product so broken.   When you move the mouse left, the turret gently glides one way, only to stop if you push the mouse a little bit in the other direction.  It’s hard to explain, but it’s absolutely appalling that a game could control so badly…you can’t even target the enemy soldiers with any precision.

I give points to WizardWorks for publishing a game that actually caught my interest.  Those were some nice screenshots.  But I still can’t get over the mouse control issue in this game.  But mark my works:  this idea of a beach invasion game is a great one.  A small developer could do a really good version of this game with a hot 3D engine.  Sure it would be nothing more than a simple action game, but I bet it would be a lot of fun trying to single-handedly hold off an invasion.
