RealMyst?

While the original Myst wasn’t very well respected among gamers (myself included), I’m intrigued by RealMyst, a real-time 3D version of the original due for release this fall. Co-developed by Cyan and SunSoft, RealMyst features breath-taking 3D visuals that look remarkably similar to the rendered still images used in the original.  The developers promise that RealMyst will also include a changing night-to-day cycle along with weather effects and creatures that live and breathe inside of the game world.   It’s still unclear of how the developers are going to integrate the numerous video sequences and voice-overs from the original  into the game – apparently the plot remains largely unchanged.

So far the gaming press has largely ignored RealMyst, and I’m not sure why that is.  Perhaps gamers are sick of Myst and don’t want to go back and play the original?  In my case, I didn’t even really play the original, so I’m excited to perhaps discover what everyone thought was so wonderful about the first game.

Then again, it’s always dangerous to tinker with a classic, and there’s a good possibilities gamers won’t even take notice of a Myst re-release in 2000.   (Cyan claims a “new age” will be included in the game, but so far little has surfaced about what new content will be included).
