It’s common
that PC games are delayed for a year to 18 months, but Giants: Citizen
Kabuto is definitely pushing the limits of just about every gamer’s
patience. The
marketing team behind Giants faces an uphill battle in trying to get the
gaming community re-energized about a game that virtually disappeared for
a period of time. The first
step in Giants' reemergence is this two page ad filled to the brim with
game information. Giants has had
the cuteness factor going for it, but now Interplay appears to distance
itself from that image of the game, instead opting to focus on a menacing
rendition of a Giant and his huge white teeth.
The ad even goes as far as to use that scary “Halloween” font
with broken edges to further differentiate this from being interpreted as
a Wizard of Oz-esque game set in Utopia. There’s tons of information here, including three big screenshots and profiles of the triumvirate of races that live and battle on the game island -- the developers want you to know this game is about much more than pretty pictures. But that being said, you walk away from the ad feeling like it’s a sales sheet for a home appliance -- it almost feels too busy with information. Where there is a lot of great information, the ad also doesn't quite "grab" you the way it should. Hard-core fans of Giants might read all the text, but casual gamers are apt the flip right by this ad. Grade: B |
