The Sims

Household disasters reign supreme in The Sims

Developer: Maxis

If you want to talk about innovative games in 2000, let's start with Will Wright's The Sims.  Although a lot of games on this list neatly fit into specific genre categories, I think the Sims is in a genre all by itself.  The innovative thinking behind the premise of basically devising a "people simulator" deserves praise, and this is one game I just can't wait to sit down and experience.  Although some have said the concept seems overly ambitious, you have to remember that Wright took the idea of building a city and made it manageable in SimCity.  Scheduled for release in February, look for the Sims to generate a lot of buzz and break through to the mass market in part due to its bright screenshots and family-oriented concept.

Duke Nukem Forever

Take one look at this in-game character and you'll be sold on Duke Forever

Developer: 3D Realms
Publisher: GT Interactive

There's no question Duke Nukem Forever is one of the most anticipated games; perhaps the real question is whether it's actually going to come out in 2000. 3D Realms gave us the first glimpse of the game in November, and based on the screenshots, it looks like the long time in development has been well spent on detailed character models and realistic Las Vegas-based locations.   Since the release of Half-Life I haven't seen a good traditional single player action game.  For 2000, it looks like Duke Forever has the best shot of any game at one-upping Half-Life.
