Sitting in a room filled with disillusioned developers at a Computer Game Developers Conference in Austin, Texas a few months ago, Rob Cohen intently listened to a presentation by Mike Wilson, CEO of the Gathering of Developers. To no one’s surprise, Wilson hooked the audience on his concept of creating the first developer-driven publisher in the software industry. For Cohen, Wilson’s presentation was perfect timing. He had just left Iguana Entertainment, where he was responsible for helping create the mega-hit Turok: Dinosaur Hunter; the hi-resolution Quarterback Club 98; and the forthcoming Turok 2, all for the Nintendo 64. Without question, Cohen was eager to start developing a new game. He had met with a lot of publishers to discuss starting his own company, but as he explains, "there was so much excitement in that room [where Mike made his presentation], I walked up and introduced myself at the end of the speech." As they say, the rest is history.

tbox.gif (25190 bytes)Wilson immediately took a keen interest in Cohen after meeting him. The next week, he was in Dallas meeting the local founding developers of g.o.d., and "the clincher was that these guys not only supported g.o.d. with all their heart…they helped create it." Once the ink was dry, Cohen’s new company, Edge of Reality – which doesn’t even have an official logo as of yet – became the first new developer signed to the Gathering of Developers since its inception (read our article about the other founding developers here).

Brining console support to the ring of g.o.d., Cohen has ambitious plans for the future of his development studio and the g.o.d. concept in general. Although details of his first two projects are still shrouded in secrecy – not to mention hardly off the drawing board – Cohen took some time to sit down with GameSlice editor-in-chief Geoff Keighley to discuss if a former programmer is fit to helm his own game development studio. Yet, for an ace programmer, Cohen seems to possess an uncanny sense of business: "we’re going to make each other rich," he says, commenting on the g.o.d. family. From the sounds of it, let’s hope his games are also going to be rich, realistic experiences.
